UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed grave alarm on Saturday following the US’s recent airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, warning of an escalating cycle of violence that could further destabilize the Middle East. Guterres urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and return to diplomatic dialogue to avoid a broader regional conflict. “At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos…There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace.”, the UN Chief said.

The airstrikes, which occurred on Friday, targeted facilities in Natanz, Arak, and Fordow. The Pentagon confirmed that the strikes were intended to severely degrade Iran’s nuclear capabilities following intelligence suggesting an imminent threat. President Donald Trump, who authorized the strikes, defended the military action, describing it as a necessary step to protect the security of the American people and their allies. In public remarks, Trump characterized the strikes as targeted and proportionate, focusing specifically on nuclear infrastructure rather than civilian areas.

However, initial assessments suggest the effectiveness of the strikes may be limited. According to a visual analysis by The Guardian, while significant damage was inflicted on the targeted facilities, key components of Iran’s nuclear program remain intact, and Iran is expected to restore operations quickly due to the deeply buried nature of many of its centrifuge halls. Iranian authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage caused by the US strike. The Iran-Israel conflict which erupted on June 13, is believed to have killed at least 430 Iranians during waves of strikes since then with around 3,500 injured.

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, warned that the country reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interests, and people from America’s strike, which was described as “outrageous” and having everlasting consequences. He urged every member of the UN to be alarmed over “this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior”.

The head of the UN’s atomic energy agency, the IAEA, stated on Sunday that there was no evidence of any radiation leaks posing health risks beyond the three Iranian nuclear sites that were struck by the US. Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed that the targeted sites contained varying levels of enriched uranium and acknowledged that radioactive and chemical contamination may have occurred within the affected facilities. He added that the agency does not expect there to be “any health consequences for people or the environment outside the targeted sites.”
