The UN Security Council released a statement on Friday that condemned the recent airstrike on a migrant detention center near Tripoli, Libya, which left 53 dead and 130 injured, and called for an immediate ceasefire and return to UN political mediation.
The government blames the attack on the Libyan National Army and its leader Khalifa Hifter. The press statement is the first approved by all fifteen members of the Security Council since the Libyan National Army began its campaign to take Tripoli in April 2019.
The UN has also called for an independent investigation into the circumstances of the bombing to ensure that those responsible are held to account. A spokesperson stated that the Secretary-General is “outraged by the number of deaths and injuries.” He, likewise, has reminded all parties of their obligations to avoid civilian casualties under international humanitarian law and of the importance of providing safe shelter to migrants while their asylum claims are processed. The Secretary-General has also called for an immediate ceasefire.
