UN officials warned on Monday that the war in Sudan is reaching its deadlier phase as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) gain territories in the Kordofan region.
During several briefings at the 10,077th meeting of the UN Security Council, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Khaled Khiari confirmed the alarming humanitarian situation in Sudan as the conflict is reaching the 1,000-day mark. The RSF gained control of the city of Babanusa in West Kordofan at the beginning of December, and captured Heglig in South Kordofan, with South-Sudanese forces entering Sudan to protect the Heglig oil infrastructure. Khiari stated, “The United Nations is fully committed to working with all international actors to end the violence – for the sake of the people of Sudan and regional stability.”
Edem Wosornu, the director of the Crisis Response Division at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), also called for action and confirmed Kordofan as the new epicenter of violence. Wosornu recalled:
Drone attacks have also targeted peacekeepers and UN personnel, as recent attacks against a UN logistics base killed six peacekeepers. Attacks against healthcare infrastructure were also reported. Over 1,600 people have been killed during the 65 strikes against health facilities this year. This follows the atrocities committed in the Zamzam camp for internally displaced people. In this camp in North Darfur, reports document the deaths of at least 1,013 civilians, including executions, torture, and sexual and gender-based violence. Researchers have also recently exposed evidence of systematic mass killings and body disposal in El Fasher.

Wosornu urged the Security Council to “send a strong, unequivocal message that attacks directed against civilians, indiscriminate attacks, sexual violence, and other shameless violations of the most basic tenets of international humanitarian law will not be tolerated.” Allowing for humanitarian workers to gain safe access to key affected areas must also be a priority for the international community.
