United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned about the increasing backlash against women’s rights worldwide on Tuesday. At the ongoing 69th Commission on the Status of Women, Guterres called for urgent action to safeguard hard-won progress.
Guterres warned:
Guterres highlighted global trends such as Afghanistan’s gender apartheid, conflict-related sexual violence in Sudan and Haiti and technological exploitation driven by technology and AI targeting women in his speech. As the Commission continues, women’s rights advocates are pushing for concrete commitments from governments to counteract regressive policies and protect women’s fundamental freedoms.
This comes just days after women’s rights NGO Equality Now issued a report highlighting an alarming rollback of fundamental rights relating to women’s rights, LGBTQ+ protections and democratic freedoms. This also comes just a day after Human Rights Watch said amendments to Iraq’s personal status law, came into effect in February, failed to adequately protect women’s right to equality before the law and leave them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.
The Commission on the Status of Women marked 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and 25 years since the Security Council Resolution 1325. The commission saw the adoption of a landmark declaration by member states to advancing the rights, equality and empowerment for all women and girls.

Guterres warned:
UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous also echoed the concerns of the secretary general, while noting that 159 countries had reaffirmed their commitments. Guterres urged nations to prioritize investments in gender equality, regulate AU under gender-inclusive frameworks and expand funding for grassroots women’s organizations facing shrinking civil space.Women’s organizations and civil society played a major role in securing those gains. I applaud your efforts. Yet, women and girls still face an appalling array of wrongs, Around the world, women’s rights defenders face harassment, threats and violence – even murder. They face shrinking civil space and shrinking funds. The result: the erosion of rights and a deficit of accountability.
