UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a statement Saturday denounced attacks on civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
The statement was made in response to the recent escalation in the ongoing violent conflict between the Yemeni Houthi movement and a Saudi-led armed coalition. This armed coalition entered Yemen in 2015 in an attempt to quell internal conflict and was met with resistance by the Houthis. Since this military intervention, over 10,000 civilians have died and millions of people in Yemen have been displaced.
The recent escalation of the conflict has resulted in multiple civilian sites in Saudi Arabia and Yemen being targeted by airstrikes.
According to the statement by the Secretary-General, the recent airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition killed over 8 Yemeni civilians. Guterres urged all parties to cease the conflict, stating that the parties needed to “immediately deescalate, cease hostilities, and abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution.”
The Secretary-General also expressed his concerns over reports of further attacks in the city and ports of Hudaydah, which has been a crucial site of humanitarian aid to Yemen since the onset of this conflict. He ended his statement by pleading for the parties “to reduce violence and urgently reach a negotiated settlement to end the conflict in Yemen.”
