A group of UN experts on Friday urged Croatia to immediately end abuse and violence against women during reproductive health procedures.

During a campaign that began in October, more than 400 Croatian women came forward about maltreatment while seeking reproductive health care. The reports included doctors performing medical procedures without anesthetic and hospital staff humiliating patients. Some women said that their limbs were tied by hospital staff. Many of these incidences occurred while women were seeking treatment after a miscarriage. According to the BBC, Croatian women report that this treatment has been occurring for decades.

The UN experts said, “Health personnel should apply the highest standards of professionalism and ethical codes in delivering reproductive health care, and they must respect the dignity, privacy, autonomy, integrity and security of women.”

Some Croatian hospital officials and members of the government have denied the allegations.

The UN asks Croatia to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations and devise a plan to prevent this type of abuse from occurring in the future.
