UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet Jeria on Wednesday said an international investigation is needed to address the killing of Saudi dissident and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.
During a press conference for the seventieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Bachelet was questioned whether “she has asked for the evidence in the hands of the Turkish authorities concerning the killing of Khashoggi.” The journalist further claimed that “the response of Geneva has been reactive, not proactive.”
Bachelet called for an international investigation, asking member states and the security counsel “to ensure what happened” and discover “who is responsible for that awful killing.”
Bachelet stated that her office doesn’t have the mandate to conduct a criminal investigation, but reaffirmed her office’s duty of protecting journalists.
“All journalists should be protected. We need to ensure that the freedom of speech and the freedom of expression and opinion can be ensured.”
Senior US Senators, briefed by the CIA, said on Tuesday they were more certain than ever that Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, was responsible for the killing of [the] journalist.
