The proportion of women killed in armed conflict doubled from 2022 to 2023, the UN reported Wednesday. The UN also recorded a rise in the amount of conflict-related sexual violence.
The report of the Secretary General on Women and Peace and Security was prepared pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which urged parties to a conflict to prioritize the safety of women and girls during war and ensure their active participation in peace processes.
The report attributes the rise in the number of women victims of war and sexual violence to inadequate funding of causes dedicated to the protection of women’s rights and ensuring women’s participation in conflict prevention, resolution, and recovery. The report also noted minimal inclusion of women in decision making platforms that concern the restoration of peace in war-torn areas. It specifically cited the absence of women in the peace processes of Yemen, South Sudan, and Gaza. The report encouraged the ensuring of meaningful participation of women in peace processes in a manner that acknowledges the one-third gender rule.
