United Nations humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine Denise Brown condemned a Russian missile strike in the city of Chernihiv on Saturday. The Saturday strike on the northern city came as many citizens were leaving church on the Eastern Orthodox holiday of the Transfiguration of the Lord. It resulted in seven casualties, including a six-year old child, and left hundreds wounded.

Brown’s words were stark as he condemned Russia’s continued war crimes and violations of international humanitarian law:

I am extremely disturbed by the news of yet another Russian strike that hit shortly ago the heart of Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, leaving dozens of civilians killed and injured, including children. It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to the church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians.
France 24 English reporter Emmanuel Chaze reported on the strike live from the scene: “It’s a special day here in Ukraine for the Orthodox community. It was a day of celebration. A lot of people were just out of the church, they were making their way back to their homes. They were just walking to the city centre when this missile, an Iskander precision missile, hit the very heart of Chernihiv.”

Brown further stated, “Attacks directed against civilians or civilian objects are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law. It must stop.”

The US Tuesday pledged to sending up to $500million in military aid to Ukraine in response to Russia’s ongoing attacks.
