UN human rights experts on Friday called on Serbia to end attacks and intimidation against journalists and urgently address what is described as a deteriorating environment for media freedom in the country. The experts warned that the pattern of harassment, smear campaigns, physical assaults, doxxing and online threats has become “systemic,” placing Serbian journalists at heightened risk and undermining the country’s obligation to protect freedom of expression.
The statement follows an earlier call from the UN in November urging Serbian authorities to “speed up steps to ensure accountability” for rights violations, including assaults on journalists during demonstrations and electoral periods.
In addition, Serbia’s Independent Journalists’ Association (NUNS) has reported a continued rise in attacks, documenting 30 incidents against journalists in November alone, including physical assaults, threats and obstruction while reporting. NUNS and the Association of Independent Electronic Media further highlighted that female journalists remain disproportionately targeted, noting that women in media face heightened harassment, discrimination and online abuse.
Other press freedom organizations have documented a steady escalation of threats in recent years reporting that journalists in Serbia continue to face targeted intimidation, hate campaigns and obstruction while covering protests, warning that “the hostile climate for the press is worsening.” The International Federation of Journalists similarly demanded accountability for attacks on journalists during student protests in Novi Sad, stating that police units failed to protect reporters who were verbally and physically assaulted despite having identified themselves as media.
Reporters Without Borders called this year “one of the most violent periods for the press in recent memory,” and pointed out that Serbian authorities have acknowledged only a fraction of these cases. The European Committee for the Protection of Journalists has also previously expressed alarm over “escalating threats” in Novi Sad, documenting and condemning incidents where reporters were detained or obstructed while covering rallies or protests.
