A UN special rapporteur on Friday called on the UN Human Rights Council to increase human rights safeguards in junta-controlled Myanmar, contending that the cost of international inaction is a death sentence for millions.

Rapporteur Tom Andrews spoke on continued disruptions to the international order and their repercussions, particularly when addressing human rights concerns in nations like Myanmar, stating:

The United Nations and the principles on which it was founded more than 80 years ago are under severe strain. Isolationism, transactional relationships and might-equals-right approaches to global affairs are undermining respect for international law and human rights.
Andrews claimed that waning international support, driven by diplomatic fatigue, has strengthened junta control, particularly in light of continued Chinese support and fragile opposition movements. The expert commended international efforts to expose recent national elections as a fraudulent ploy for legitimacy and encouraged the international community to continue coordinated efforts to reject illegitimate regimes.

The Myanmar military’s 2021 coup d’état overthrew an elected government and undid the country’s transition to democracy following half a century of military rule. The current government has been called a modern authoritarian regime and has commissioned numerous documented extrajudicial killings and potential crimes against humanity.

Since seizing power, reportedly over 3 million people have been internally displaced, and recorded casualties exceed 6,000. Poverty rates have skyrocketed, and over 7.8 million children suffer from educational inequality. More than 30,000 individuals have been arrested on questionable charges of inciting political dissent or perceived opposition to the military regime, including former state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

The regime has also targeted ethnic minorities, particularly Rohingya Muslims. In 2018, UN investigators labeled the persecution a genocide and called for international accountability against the nation’s military leaders.

“The Rohingya ethnic minority continues to suffer both in Rakhine State and across the border in Bangladesh where 1.3 million Rohingya remain,” Andrews said.

The international community has responded with targeted economic sanctions, arms embargos and diplomatic isolation to weaken the junta’s stronghold. International justice mechanisms such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) have also stepped in. In 2024, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan requested an arrest warrant for military commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing for crimes against humanity.
