Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Sunday encouraged stakeholders in Haiti to put aside differences and to prioritize saving lives.

The Secretary-General responded to UN Security Council Resolution 2645 by submitting a letter to the Security Council outlining “options for enhanced security support to Haiti.” Resolution 2645 asked, among other requests, for the Secretary-General to consult with stakeholders in Haiti to develop possible options for enhanced security support to combat gang violence. The statement “urges the international community,” to deploy armed forces to address the Haitian crisis.

The UN Security Council passed and requested guidance under Resolution 2645 in response to ongoing concerns of access to resources such as safe drinking water, food, and fuel, decreasing political and economic stability, and violations of human rights. Haiti has been in humanitarian crisis for a number of years, but the situation has deteriorated further after the assassination of former president Jovenel Moise.

On October 7, during the daily briefing, Dujarric stated that there is major concern over the cholera outbreak and access to fuel. However, Dujarric said that there has not been an “official request from the Haitian Government,” for international force to remedy the issues. Dujarric confirmed that the report will be released sometime this week with the UN Office in Haiti (BINUH) findings.

The UN will provide the details of the letter before October 15 with a report of consultations that have led to the recommendations within the letter.
