The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) said Tuesday that it dismissed its first deputy over their role in a whistleblower case.
NABU issued the statement on its Telegram channel without naming the specific employee or case. However, the agency stated, in Ukrainian, that the dismissal was due to the deputy’s “actions and statements of a negative nature, aimed at personally and professionally discrediting” an employee who submitted a tip about an information leak. Activities which NABU stated are “an unacceptable violation of the highest standards of ethics and integrity.”
The dismissal of the official is part of Ukraine’s goal to reduce corruption in its government. In August the Deputy Minister of Energy and several prominent business people were arrested as part of a widespread investigation into bribery. Additionally, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food was charged in April with illegally acquiring state land.
A 2022 report by the European Commission stated that Ukraine’s protection of the rule of law and reduction of corruption were key requirements for EU membership. An announcement by the European Commission in June stated that Ukraine’s crackdown on corruption meant the county could begin EU membership negotiations.
