For the 59th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, the UK released on Tuesday a joint statement for the Interactive Dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem (OPTs). The statement condemned human suffering in Gaza and opposed the Israeli government’s escalating military action.

UK Ambassador for Human Rights Eleanor Sanders delivered the joint statement on behalf of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, and the UK. The statement rejected any intention by Israel to take control of Gaza, emphasizing the already high death toll of 55,000 Palestinians. These countries also condemned and urged investigations into Israeli attacks against UN and aid workers.

The statement concluded by urging a ceasefire deal and supporting a two-state solution.

The EU has also recently released a similar statement. The EU stated it deplores “the catastrophic humanitarian situation, notably caused by the insufficient entry of aid into Gaza”. Furthermore, the EU also rejected demographic or territorial changes in the Gaza Strip, supporting a two-state solution following the UNSCR 2735.

The Commission of Inquiry of the OPTs released its report for the UN Human Rights Council session on May 6. The commission concluded that Israeli forces committed the war crimes of directing attacks against civilians, wilful killing, and intentionally launching an attack in the knowledge that such an attack would cause excessive incidental loss of life or injury to civilians under Article 8 of the Rome Statute. The report also claimed that Israel has committed the crime against humanity of extermination.

During the session, the chair of the Commission of Inquiry of the OPTs, Navanethem Pillay, stated, “More than 1,300 children have been killed just from the end of the ceasefire on 18th March to date, and more than 15,000 children have been identified as having been killed since October 2023.” This claim demonstrates the deliberate targeting of civilians and children by Israeli military actions.

The conflict in the region is continuing to escalate, with recent air strikes exchanged between Iran and Israel. As G7 leaders are meeting in a summit in Canada, human rights groups are urging immediate action and sanctions against Israel for its actions in the Gaza Strip.
