Extinction Rebellion co-founder Gail Bradbrook was arrested Tuesday morning by London’s Metropolitan Police for conspiracy to cause criminal damage and fraud.
The charges are related to last month’s protests against multiple banks, including HSBC and Barclays. Extinction Rebellion activists smashed the windows of banks in Canary Wharf and targeted Lloyd’s of London in what the group is calling a “Money Rebellion.” It accuses the financial institutions of financing the current global climate crisis.
In relation to the charge of fraud, Bradbrook’s group allegedly used personal credit cards to make donations to other groups and organizations they claim were damaged by banks’ actions – then refused to repay the debt.
Bradbrook started Extinction Rebellion with Roger Hallam and Simon Bramwell in 2018. Bradbrook, who has a PhD in molecular biophysics, says the UK and other countries are acting too slowly to stop climate change and need to do more to halt a catastrophe. The global environmental movement also accuses the Western financial system of fueling the abuse and inaction.
Extinction Rebellion has staged numerous high-profile protests in the US, France and other developed nations, including Australia. Its stated purpose is to use non-violent protest to force government action on climate change and prompt a wider revolt against the political, economic and social structures of the modern world to avoid devastating scenarios outlined by scientists studying climate change.
