The UK’s gambling regulator announced on Tuesday that it is charging 15 individuals with allegedly using confidential information surrounding election dates to “gain an unfair advantage in the betting market”. Many of the individuals charged are high-profile and held office.
The Gambling Commission says that the charges were made following an investigation, launched in June 2024, that the named individuals allegedly used “advance knowledge of the proposed election date” to cheat on election date betting. The charges are being brought under Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005, which outlines that a person commits a criminal offence by cheating at gambling and that cheating is defined as “actual or attempted deception or interference in connection with” the gambling process or the gambling game, race, or other event.
Craig Williams, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s aide at the time, was among the 15 charged. It is alleged that the Conservative Party is withdrawing support from Williams in light of the charges. Some of the alleged offenders were also members of the Met Police and Conservative Party affiliates. At the launch of the investigation, the Met outlined that there might be additional charges, including Misconduct in Public Office.
Section 42(4) stipulates that those found guilty of cheating are liable to a conviction on indictment to “imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years” and/or a fine. The charged individuals are due to attend Westminster Magistrates Court on June 13, 2025.
