UK Attorney General Suella Braverman is facing calls to resign after defending Dominic Cummings, who has been accused of breaking lock down laws in the UK, on Saturday.
Cummings, chief adviser to the Prime Minister and contributor to developing the laws surrounding lockdown, has been under media and public scrutiny in the past week. Cummings is accused of breaking lockdown laws by traveling 264 miles with suspected COVID-19 symptoms, in direct violation of the Coronavirus Act 2020. In an address to the media, Cummings defended his actions, stating that he acted “reasonably and legally.” The division of opinion surrounds whether his travel was “reasonable” under Part 6(2).
The Prime Minister supported Cummings in his daily briefing on Sunday, stating that he acted “legally.” Nevertheless, the Attorney General now faces pressure to resign due to a tweet further supporting these actions, and criticizing the press for “politicizing” Cummings’ actions. Lawyers have criticized Braverman for undermining her role as independent chief legal adviser.
