Thousands gathered Saturday for an emergency protest in Washington D.C. to fight the “US-funded Israel genocide” and the government crackdown of free speech.
Protestors reasoned that US President Donald Trump has spent “billions of US tax dollars to aid Israel in committing atrocities against the Palestinian people.” The People’s Forum, one of the organizers of the event, unveiled a banner with the names of the Palestinians who had been killed in Israel since October 2023.
The protestors rallied against the renewed fighting in Gaza since Israel resumed strikes on March 18, killing an additional 1,163 people. This figure includes an additional 100 people killed since April 3.
“Israel continued to violate the terms of the ceasefire reached on January 19th, breaking it over 980 times before resuming all out war on March 17. The movement against genocide in North America has risen time and time again in support of Gaza and will not rest now.” said the People’s Forum Education Director, Layan Fuleihan.
Israeli ministers approved the ceasefire deal with Hamas in January. In addition to a ceasefire, the parties have also agreed to release hostages. However, the Israel Defence Forces, citing “Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations” targets, launched airstrikes again in mid-March. Israel also imposed a blockade on Gaza that obstructed essential humanitarian access.
A group of UN experts has urged states to join the Hague Group and hold Israel accountable for international law violations within the Palestine territories governed by the International Criminal Court. Human Rights Watch has urged the US government to halt the deportation of noncitizen students who speak out about Palestine, such as Rumeysa Ozturk, and Mahmoud Khalil.
Relatedly, protests have erupted across the US against the Trump administration and DOGE. One protest, located in Tucson, revolved around the US aid in the Israel-Palestine conflict, the firing of federal workers and the deportations across the country.
“The fact that you are all here, that we are here together: It means that you are patriots,” said Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. “Don’t ever let them take that word away from us.”
