The Constitutional Court of Thailand suspended the nation’s prime minster (PM) Tuesday, ordering her to stop performing her duties following allegations of misconduct and serious ethical violations tied to a leaked phone conversation with a senior Cambodian leader.
Thirty-six senators filed a petition with the court alleging that PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra failed to fulfill her constitutional duties, withheld appropriate responses, and acted in alignment with Cambodian interests due to personal ties. They also accused her of lacking integrity and committing serious ethical misconduct, grounds for her removal under Sections 170(1)(4), 160(4), and 160(5) of the Constitution.
Paetongtarn accepted the suspension and issued a public apology, but nevertheless vowed to defend herself in court, stating that the phone call between her and Cambodian strong-arm leader Hun Sen was in good faith. While addressing the media, she stated that:
According to the court’s statement, Paetongtarn admitted that the conversation was authentic but claimed it was a private diplomatic exchange aimed at easing tensions and protecting Thailand’s sovereignty. However, the phone call has sparked widespread anger and placed her government on the brink of collapsing.
The suspension is currently pending an ethics investigation as the Deputy PM and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit has been appointed acting prime minister and will be leading the new cabinet at the oath-taking ceremony before Thailand’s king this Thursday.
The suspension comes one month after a violent armed-dispute between Thailand and Cambodia broke out along the nations’ shared border. Both sides have since agreed to de-escalate the situation, although tensions in the region remain high as leaders on both sides continue to threaten further military action.

In the phone conversation, Paetongtarn allegedly mocked a Thai military commander and rendered a compliant tone with the Cambodian leader and his demands. Ties between Hun Sen and Paetongtarn’s father and former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra also troubled senators, who chastised Paetongtarn for repeatedly referring to Hun Sen as “uncle.”My method may not have pleased everyone, but I did everything with 100 percent effort for the country’s well-being. I had no personal agenda; I only sought to prevent turmoil, loss of life, and further conflict. If lives had been lost, I would not have been able to bear it.
