A Tanzanian court sustained opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s objection on Wednesday after he opposed the prosecution’s use of secret witnesses in his trial, The Citizen Tanzania reports.
The prosecution sought to have witnesses testify from an enclosed cell, where their identity would not be exposed. Lissu objected, arguing that it would violate violated Rule Three of the Witness Protection Rules by preventing “the court from observing the witness.” The court adjourned to consider the objection and others raised by Lissu. Judge Dunstan Ndunguru, the presiding judge in the three-judge court, issued a ruling supporting Lissu’s objection, finding that the secrecy “obscured the witness from view” and thereby violated the rule.
The adjournment constituted yet another delay in Lissu’s trial. Human Rights Watch reported in August 2025 that the trial had already been postponed five times for various reasons. It has now been 10 months since Lissu’s arrest for demanding constitutional and electoral reforms, prior to last year’s election. In said election, the current president Samia Suluhu Hassan won more than 97% of the vote. Lissu and another opposition party candidate were barred from running for not signing the electoral code of conduct. The election led to a wave of protests to which the government responded with mass arrests and killings. Amnesty International reported that the government used disproportionate, lethal force and shut down the internet.
Lissu, himself a lawyer, is representing himself at trial after alleging he was denied meaningful opportunities to consult with his legal representatives. The court overruled other objections Lissu made on Monday, and the trial is set to continue on Thursday.
