Voters in Taiwan voted against same-sex marriage in a referendum that took place during local elections Saturday.

The referendum asked voters whether they thought that marriage in their civil code should be defined as between one man and one woman, and a majority voted that it should. Voters also voted to have a different process other than marriage protecting same-sex couples.

The ballot initiative comes after a May 2017 ruling made by Taiwan’s constitutional court that allowed same-sex marriages to be legally recognized. The initiative itself is only advisory but is expected to influence lawmakers that are up for re-election in 2020.
