The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) on Monday released a report detailing 72 torture methods used by the Syrian Regime.
Since the start of the democratic uprising in Syria in March 2011, almost 1.2 million Syrians have been arrested and detained for some period. The report documents 14,000 deaths in Syrian detention centers since March 2011, including 185 deaths that have happened in 2019.
The Chairman of the SNHR stated, “The Syrian people have the right to help from the rest of the world’s states that have ratified the Geneva Conventions in ensuring that the Syrian regime respects the implementation of the Geneva Conventions and that it stops systematically torturing Syrians to death.”
A former regime photographer code-named Caesar smuggled out photographs documenting the torture inflicted by the Syrian regime. The government has refused to acknowledge the torture and continues to promote those who perpetuate it.
The report details that the methods and patterns of the torture are so widely practiced that “hardly any” survivors did not report being subjected to one of the detailed methods. The torture categories include physical torture, health neglect, sexual violence, forced labor and psychological torture.
The report recommends intervention from the UN and calls for action from those states that are members of the Convention against Torture. SNHR also called on the US Congress to pass the Caesar Act, which aims to impose sanctions and financial restrictions on individuals and entities related to the conflict in Syria.
