The Federal Council of Switzerland Wednesday adopted the new European Union (“EU”) sanctions against Russia and Belarus in connection to their military aggression toward Ukraine. Switzerland’s Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) also imposed financial sanctions and travel restrictions on 200 individuals, including two of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s daughters.

The EU on Friday formally adopted sweeping new sanctions against Russia, including bans on the import of coal, wood, cement, seafood, vodka, chemicals, and other goods that serve as important sources of revenue for Russia. As well as, a ban on Russian and Belarusian road transport and undertakings preventing them from transporting goods by road within the EU and a ban on access to EU ports for Russian vessels. There are exemptions to these bans for the shipment of humanitarian goods and essentials such as food products. The Federal Council adopted all the new EU measures against Russia and Belarus with the exception of bans on road and sea transport to the EU, which the Council believed were not necessary due to Switzerland’s geographic location.

Additionally, the 200 individuals that the EAER approved sanctions against include individuals from the fields of politics, industry, communications, and the armed forces.

This is the fifth round of sanctions that have been imposed by the EU and Switzerland against Russia and Belarus for their aggression toward Ukraine.
