Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned on Thursday of ongoing mass atrocities and attacks on medical facilities in Sudan’s North Darfur region, amid escalating conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). MSF called on warring parties to immediately cease indiscriminate violence and to enable urgent, comprehensive humanitarian assistance.
MSF’s new report “Besieged, Attacked, Starved” documents a dire humanitarian crisis in the North Darfur region, with civilians suffering from “indiscriminate and ethnically targeted violence,” including widespread killings, sexual assaults, kidnappings, looting, and severe hunger. The report also details a paramilitary assault on displacement camps, forcing an estimated 400,000 people to flee into areas beyond the reach of humanitarian aid, leaving them vulnerable to attacks and further mass violence. MSF additionally reported that systematic assaults on medical facilities compelled them to halt their operations in the region, while the last remaining hospital faces severe shortages and ongoing attacks.
These atrocities are a result of the civil war taking place in the country since April 2023. Years of political instability led to widespread confrontation between the official army Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Both warring parties have been accused of committing indiscriminate shelling, airstrikes, and attacks on populated civilian areas, which would amount to a violation of international humanitarian law. The RSF and allied militias have been singled out by the US State Department for committing genocide, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity, especially in Darfur.
The Sudan conflict resulted in one of the most severe humanitarian and human rights crises in recent history. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk recently raised urgent concerns over the deteriorating situation, warning of catastrophic consequences for civilians and urging immediate international action to protect civilians and address ongoing abuses.
