The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) urged Sudanese authorities to immediately release two freelance journalists detained in North Darfur.

CPJ Middle East and North Africa Regional Director Sara Qudah said, “The July 7 arrest of freelance journalists Nasr Yaqoub and Mohamed Ahmed Nazar is a clear attack on the public’s right to know what is happening in Darfur”. Qudah called for the release of both journalists and requested investigations to hold the authorities who fired at Yaqoub accountable for this serious attack.

Nasr Yaqoub and Mohamed Ahmed Nazar are two freelance journalists who covered the war in Sudan. Both Yaqoub and Nazar were detained on July 7, 2025, by the Sudan Liberation Movement–Transitional Council (SLM–TC), an armed group linked with the Sudanese Armed Forces.

According to local news sources, these journalists were likely detained for their involvement in an incident that occurred on July 5. An officer of the SLM–TC opened fire against Yaqoub’s internet shop after he refused to hand over a Starlink device. Deputy Chief of Staff for Moral Guidance and military spokesman, Brigadier General Abdul-Mumin Ali Abu Bakr, alleged that internet servers in the area are under strict military supervision due to fear of coordinates being shared with the opposing Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Yaqoub was also accused of using provocative language against the officer, leading to his incarceration.

Nazar was also detained due to a post he published regarding the SLM–TC’s attack against Yaqoub. Local sources confirmed that authorities regarded this Facebook post as a hostile act against their actions.

The right of civilians and journalists to freely express themselves is protected under Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Arbitrary arrests are also prohibited under international law, hindering the right to liberty under Article 9 ICCPR.

The use of Starlink devices is crucial for journalists in Sudan, who rely on these for internet access following the collapse of the communication infrastructure in Sudan. These journalists on the ground are essential for transparency and offering coverage of the human rights violations occurring in war-torn Sudan. The CPJ reported that since the internal conflict broke out in Sudan in 2023, 14 journalists and media workers have been killed. Sudan is currently facing a serious conflict with mass atrocities and human rights concerns. Recently, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned the reports of civilian casualties amid the ongoing crisis that is unfolding in areas of conflict.
