A senior UN official claimed Sunday at a press conference held in Munich that countries are violating the Libya arms embargo and that they must be held accountable.

UN Deputy Special Representative to Libya Stephanie Williams said that “the arms embargo has become a joke.”

Libya is currently the center of an international armed conflict. The Libyan National Army, led by commander Khalifa Haftar, are fighting with the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli since April of last year, with an objective to gain control of the capital.

The UAE and Egypt support the Libyan National Army while Turkey supports the GNA. The countries have all reportedly violated the arms embargo by land, sea and air.

These violations undermine a UN Security Council resolution passed only a week ago. The resolution calls for a “lasting cease fire” amid rising violence. The resolution also expressed “grave concern” for the humanitarian situation, including “deteriorating living standards and insufficient provision of basic services and the situation faced by migrants, refugees, and internally displaced people.”
