Amnesty International on Monday renewed its urgent call for the immediate and unconditional release of prominent Saudi cleric and reformist scholar Salman al-Ouda, who has been held in solitary confinement since his arrest in September 2017. The organization condemned the continued detention of Alodah as “unjust” and “politically motivated,” citing a broader crackdown on dissent within the kingdom.
In its statement, Amnesty condemned the prolonged legal proceedings against al-Ouda, who potentially faces the death penalty. The statement read that Salman al-Ouda is being punished solely for peacefully expressing his views. His detention is a blatant violation of his rights to freedom of expression and fair trial, and they urge the Saudi authorities to immediately and unconditionally release him and drop all charges.
Al-Ouda, a well-known Islamic scholar, was arrested shortly after he posted a tweet praying for reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, during a period of heightened regional tensions. He was subsequently held without charge for months, denied access to legal counsel, and subjected to repeated violations of his due process rights.
Al-Ouda has endured severe conditions in detention, including prolonged solitary confinement, limited access to legal counsel, and restricted contact with family. His health has deteriorated significantly over the years, with concerns mounting about his treatment in prison.
Despite widespread international concern, including from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and other organizations such as Human Rights Watch, al-Ouda remains behind bars. His son, Abdullah al-Ouda, who lives in exile in the United States, has led global advocacy efforts calling for his father’s release, highlighting the broader climate of repression under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Saudi Arabia claims that reforms are underway, particularly in the areas of women’s rights and economic liberalization under the Vision 2030 plan. However, ctivists argue that these steps are overshadowed by systematic suppression of peaceful dissent and civil liberties.
Amnesty’s renewed appeal coincides with increased international scrutiny of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, especially in light of its efforts to rebrand itself as a global investment and tourism hub. As al-Ouda’s trial drags on with no resolution in sight, Amnesty and other rights groups continue to rally for his release, framing his detention as a litmus test for Saudi Arabia’s genuine commitment to reform.
