Russian overnight strikes on Ukrainian cities killed at least 10-14 civilians, including children, hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy began talks with US President Donald Trump on potential solutions to end the war, according to reports Monday.
UNICEF condemned the attacks, urging an end to strikes on populated areas after confirming “more young lives lost and devastated” in the latest barrage.
According to reports, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia were hit the hardest, with roughly seven killed in a residential Kharkiv neighborhood and three in Zaporizhzhia, amid what Zelenskyy described as “demonstrative and cynical” attacks aimed at undermining peace talks and diplomacy.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Secretary-General António Guterres was closely monitoring events in Washington and reiterated support for “a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace in Ukraine, one that fully upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, [and] territorial integrity, within its internationally recognized borders in line with the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions.”
Sources reported Russia launched about 140 drones and multiple missiles overnight, with 88 intercepted, and recorded strikes in at least six regions, marking the most significant drone attack since August 4. Video from Kharkiv showed a gaping hole torn through the roof and upper floors of an apartment block and extensive debris. Children were reportedly among the injured as rescuers searched the wreckage.
The attacks coincided with a hastily arranged White House meeting in which Trump said the US would help Europe provide security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any settlement, following his Alaska talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
UN human rights monitors noted July 2025 saw the highest civilian casualty figures of the Russia-Ukraine War since May 2022—286 killed and 1,388 injured—with short-range drones accounting for nearly a quarter of casualties and long-range strikes responsible for almost 40 percent of deaths and injuries. Increased deaths follow a Russian offensive campaign which has seen Russian forces increase frontline activity.
