Russia’s media censorship agency, Roskomnadzor, opened a case against Google Monday for failing to remove banned content from its search results.
According to the agency, Google has failed to remove up to 30 percent of prohibited content from its searches. This “dangerous content” includes extremist, pornographic, and suicide-related information. Russian law requires Google and other search engine operators to remove banned sites from their results using Roskomnadzor’s registry, which Google reportedly does on a case-by-case basis.
While the case is in an early administrative phase, it may proceed to court, where Google could be held liable for up to 5 million roubles (USD $65,670). This builds on a previous 1.5 million rouble fine issued by Russian courts in August for the same issue.
Google in Russia has not yet commented on the administrative action.
