The Russian Foreign Ministry called on Saturday for an investigation into a drone strike in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region. The ministry condemned the strike as a a “yet another provocation” to the region.
The kamikaze attack targeted a Transnistrian defense ministry unit on Friday, resulting in damage to a radar station. The attacked facility was 6 kilometers from the border of Ukraine. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned the attack, claiming the attack “aimed at aggravating the already tense situation around Transnistria.” Further, Zakharova stated that Russia “expect a thorough investigation into all the circumstances of what happened” and “trust that those behind this reckless action will fully realize its dangerous consequence.”
This attack is the second to occur in Transnistria in less than a month. The region was previously hit with a drone strike on March 17, causing a fire and resulting in damage to military property. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Pridnestrovian Moldovian Republic condemned the March 17 attack as a terrorist attack. At the time, Moldova’s Bureau of Reintegration Policy confirmed that Ukraine was not involved in the incident.
The Russian-speaking breakaway region has been supported by Russia since the 1990s. Authorities in the region are known to have links with Moscow, as the region hosts approximately 1,500 Russian troops.
