Russian officials accused Ukraine on Saturday of attacking a bakery in a Russian-occupied town, Lysychansk, in eastern Ukraine, killing civilians and several representatives of the Russian occupation authorities. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also called the attack a terrorist act against civilian infrastructure. Russia says 28 people were killed in the attack. Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on this information.

The head of the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) – the occupation regime established by the Russian Federation in the occupied territory of certain districts of the Luhansk region of Ukraine, Sergey Pasechnik, said that a cafe in the town of Lysychansk had come under fire from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said search and rescue efforts were underway to find people as the bakery’s two-story building collapsed as a result of the “shelling.” Later, Sergey Pasechnik said that the bodies of 28 dead civilians had been recovered from under the rubble, and mourning was declared in the LPR on Sunday.

It was also reported that the Minister of Emergency Situations of the Luhansk People’s Republic, Oleksiy Poteleshchenko, was killed as a result of the “strike” on Lysychansk. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the “attack” monstrous.

On Monday, Russian diplomat Dmitry Polyansky said that Russia had requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the AFU strike on Lysychansk. It is expected to be scheduled for 3 PM New York time on February 6.
