On June 26, the Criminal Chamber of the Federal Supreme Court of the United Arab Emirates reconvicted 24 defendants and handed down life sentences, reversing a previous ruling that had dismissed their cases. This decision brings the total convictions in this case to 83, including 67 life sentences.
Human Rights Watch condemned the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, stating that the convictions were based on a “fundamentally unfair mass trial”, marred by serious legal violations, including restricted access to case materials, limited legal counsel, coerced testimony, allegations of abuse, and double jeopardy. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has similarly identified the UAE’s terrorism laws as overly vague, often ensnaring individuals who merely advocate for political reform.
This marks the second-largest mass trial in recent UAE history, following the 2013 “UAE94” trial that sent 69 dissidents to prison after they advocated for democratic reforms. Many of the individuals, human rights activists, academics, and political dissidents in the present case had previously been convicted in the ‘UAE94’ under similar charges.
United Nations-affiliated experts and human rights organizations continue to demand the unconditional release of those convicted, citing concerns over due process and the use of counter-terrorism legislation to suppress dissent. The UAE government, for its part, has maintained that the proceedings complied with local and international legal standards.
Human Rights Watch, however, has called for the immediate repeal of Friday’s judgments. “Given that the charges are based solely on defendants’ peaceful practice of their human rights and that the convictions were based on a fundamentally unfair trial, Emirati authorities should immediately overturn the convictions and release all defendants.”
