Progressive International members announced on Friday plans for an eight-day “Global March to Gaza” during which thousands of activists, doctors, artists, and citizens from 31 countries will march from Cairo, Egypt to Rafah in an effort to break Israel’s blockade on Gaza.
Scheduled to begin on June 12, protestors will call for an “immediate end to the genocide in Gaza, a total embargo on Israel, and total boycott from the military, economic, cultural network of Israeli violence, occupation and apartheid.” Organizers say they hope the march will pressure international institutions to take immediate action—as opposed to issuing “lukewarm” condemnations of Israel’s actions—to stop the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
Dr. Huseyin Durmaz, member of the International Health Initiative, confirmed that the campaign will begin in Cairo on June 12, move toward the Rafah crossing on June 13, hold rallies on June 14, and culminate in a large protest on June 15. Participants plan to remain in tents near the crossing until June 20.
The “Global March to Gaza” describes itself as a “civic, apolitical, and independent movement” representing “the people, in all their diversity and humanism.” Progressive International awaits authorization from Egyptian authorities to proceed with this peaceful and civil action.
In recent weeks, leaders of France, Canada, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s actions in both Gaza and the West Bank. The leaders vowed to take “concrete actions” in response to the Israel government’s military offensive in Gaza, and threatened to impose targeted sanctions on Israeli individuals and organizations involved in expanding settlements in the West Bank. In addition, the UK followed through on its promises by freezing trade talks with Israel and imposing sanctions on West Bank settlers while the European Union Commission announced that it would reevaluate its association agreement with Israel.
While these steps mark a shift from the West’s previous approach with Israel, recent condemnation from the international community has been widely criticized for failing to include broader sanctions. In response to what it sees as inaction regarding Israel’s conduct in Gaza and the West Bank, Progressive International is mobilizing in support of Palestine and calling for enforceable measures to hold Israel accountable under international humanitarian law.
Israel has blocked all food, humanitarian aid, and medical supplies from entering Gaza since March 2, which Human Rights Watch has called a “deliberate starvation” of two million people now living in famine. Aid agencies have reported that approximately 171,000 metric tons of pre-positioned food—enough to feed two million people in Gaza for three to four months—remain blocked from entering Gaza. Activists argue that the blockade will only end if countries cut all economic and diplomatic ties with Israel. The “Global March to Gaza” aims to convey this message to the international community, and to negotiate with Egyptian authorities to open the Rafah crossing. Roshan Daddo, spokesperson for one of the participating organizations, stated that they hope “everyone participating goes back to demand their governments and corporations implement arms, trade, energy embargoes, sports, cultural and academic boycotts to hit the genocidal state of Israel economically.”
