The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Monday urged Indian authorities to protect Washington Post columnist and investigative journalist Rana Ayyub and her family after she received multiple threats of violence from an unidentified caller who appeared to know her home address.

“The threats of violence made against Rana Ayyub and her father from an unknown international number are deeply concerning,” said CPJ’s India representative Kunal Majumder. “Authorities must act swiftly to identify and hold accountable those responsible and ensure the safety of all journalists in India so they can work without fear of intimidation or violence.”

According to a police complaint filed on November 3, Ayyub received repeated WhatsApp calls and messages from an international number the day before. The caller demanded that she publish a column on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, during which around 3,000 Sikhs were killed following former-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination. The caller threatened to send people to attack her and kill her father if she refused.

Ayyub stated that the caller’s profile image resembled that of imprisoned gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, though CPJ has not independently verified any link.

Following the threats, police were deployed to her residence for protection. Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe did not respond to CPJ’s request for comment, while Senior Inspector Umesh Gawli confirmed that Ayyub’s statement was being recorded.

Ayyub’s personal information was leaked online last year, and she has faced sustained harassment, trolling, and legal intimidation for her reporting. Earlier this year, the Delhi High Court ordered police to register an FIR against her for allegedly insulting Hindu deities. UN human rights experts have also repeatedly called on India to end the threats and judicial harassment targeting her.
