The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Tuesday called for the release of 75-year-old Adama Keita, the father of a Guinean Journalist, Maoudou Babila Keita, who was abducted by unknown people in Nzérékoré on September 29, 2025, more than a year after Babila fled the country following an attempted kidnapping.

According to CPJ’s Francophone Africa representative:

The circumstances of Elhadj Adama Keita’s abduction raise fears that he is being punished for the journalism of his son, Mamoudou Babila Keita. Guinean authorities must ensure that Adama Keita is reunited with his family and allow the media to operate freely.
Babila has since then denounced the abduction of his father, claiming it is an attempt by the authorities to pressure him into surrendering. According to local media, the journalist fled the country back in July 2024 after a kidnapping attempt that preceded his participation in a public debate with local youth to share his views on the conduct of the military transition underway in our country.

Local news outlets have also reported on press releases by NGOs such as Forces-Vives, which has also termed the abduction as targeted and linked to the journalist’s critical stance towards the authorities in power, stating that it is an attempt at intimidation aimed at restricting freedom of expression as well as the right to human dignity.

This incident underscores an increase in media censorship in West Africa since the coming into power of military juntas in 2021, which has been coupled with reported cases of kidnapping of journalists and activists.

The city’s prosecutor has since then ordered investigations into the kidnapping.
