As part of a documentary shown in Rome Wednesday, Pope Francis voiced his support for civil unions for same-sex couples. “Homosexuals have a right to be part of the family,” said the Pope, referring to members of the LGBTQ+ community as “children of God” and encouraging the creation of civil union laws.

These statements were broadcast in the documentary “Francesco,” which was shown at the Rome Film Festival. The film chronicles the Pope’s life and his commitment to advocacy, highlighting his work with migrants and refugees. Because Pope Francis has previously deferred to traditional Catholic doctrine surrounding marriage, his direct support seems to represent a significant shift. However, the message makes sense in the context of the documentary and the Pope’s commitment to ministering to those “on the existential peripheries.”

The film is set to be released in North America on Sunday.
