The Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) Thursday announced the detention of nine suspected Russian spies reportedly attempting to sabotage NATO operations.
At a news conference Thursday morning, Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński claimed the suspects were preparing “sabotage actions aimed at paralyzing the supply of equipment, weapons and aid to Ukraine.” Kamiński went on to say his agency seized cameras, GPS transmitters and other electronic equipment which the suspects allegedly planned to include in weapons shipments to Ukraine. Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak confirmed the reports on Polish state radio, claiming, “I would like to emphasize the great success achieved by the officers of the ABW, because the whole spy network has been unraveled.”
The ABW also found an extensive network of spy cameras hidden in vital locations throughout Poland. Polish officials claimed the spies hid cameras on railway routes and in key airports important to the shipment of weapons and aid packages to Ukraine.
The apprehension of the spy network follows a meeting between Polish President Andrzej Duda and US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns on Wednesday. According to Duda’s office, the officials met to discuss “the current security situation” in Eastern Europe.
