Police in Paris, France shot and seriously wounded an unarmed woman Tuesday after commuters reported that she was making threats at a train station and shouting Jihadist slogans. Olivier Veran, a spokesperson for the French government said in a statement that police pulled the woman aside, and asked her to calm down and show her hands. “What happened then was that law enforcement officers had no option but to open fire on this woman, given the danger of the situation,” Veran said.
The incident on Tuesday started when several commuters reported a woman behaving in a threatening way at the Bibliotheque François-Mitterrand station. In a statement, the police chief of the Paris region, Laurent Nuñez, said that the woman was allegedly shouting “you’re all going to die.” He further said that the “situation was very threatening” to the officers involved. The woman is now being treated at a nearby hospital.
The shooting comes two weeks after a school attack in the town of Arras, which the French government called an Islamist terror attack and prompted the government to raise its threat level to the highest state. During that attack, teacher Dominique Bernard was stabbed to death and three other people were injured. At the time, French President Emmanuel Macron mobilized 7,000 soldiers to protect schools and places of worship.
