The US, the EU and the UK each issued statements Saturday voicing concern about the suspension of Nigerian Chief Justice Onnoghen.
In their statements the governments questioned the constitutionality of the Nigerian executive suspending the chief justice, noting that this is a separation of powers issue and that the executive branch did not have the support of the legislative branch in making this decision.
The statements also expressed concern over the effect that this suspension may have on the upcoming presidential election, as the judiciary is important in resolving any election disputes. The statements each note that the judiciary is also an important factor in ensuring that the elections take place in a way that is consistent with the democratic process.
