Non-governmental organizations championed by Human Rights Watch released a letter on Monday addressed to the UN Commission of Inquiry regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The organizations formally requested that the Commission look into the killing of Lebanese civilians, including the journalist Issam Abdallah by the Israeli military in early December 2023. Abdallah and his team had been doing work in the Gaza Strip trying to report on the situation there when they were killed in an Israeli strike. All members were part of Reporters Without Borders who immediately showed grave concerns about the incident.
An investigation into the October attacks in Lebanon found that the Israeli strikes had killed several journalists which it claimed amounted to war crimes and asked the UN to undertake an independent investigation into what had happened. They believed based on several reports and video evidence that the Israeli military had deliberately targeted Abdallah and his team despite being marked as press, having been a known presence to Israeli forces and not doing anything that would have caused a reasonable soldier to fear for their lives. In their letter, HRW and signatories requested the UN Commission look into the potential war crimes of targeting civilians as well as the targeting of the press. However, at this stage, the findings of the UN report have not been made public.
This news comes as many in Lebanon have been vocal about what they consider to be the targeting of media personnel and that the release of the report is an important step toward justice for the families of those affected. Ramzi Kaiss a prominent Lebanese researcher at HRW has stated that the crimes should not go unpunished. This letter comes as Israel is preparing for a second phase in the war with a massive increase in tension with Hezbollah and by extension Lebanon and Iran, which has been building for months.
