A new report produced by an international panel of experts, entitled “The Human Costs and Gendered Impact of Sanctions on North Korea,” outlines the types of casualties associated with a lack of humanitarian intervention in the area. These sanctions against aid in North Korea are having a specific impacts on the women in North Korea.
“Although women make up almost half (47.8 per cent) of the workforce, the sectors are often segregated by gender, with women dominating key sectors affected by the sanctions regime, such as health and welfare services, fisheries, and textiles, including
the operation of markets that were formally adopted by the passage of the Regulations on the Operation of Stalls in September 2011.”
The restrictive opportunities for women in North Korea makes it difficult for social mobility and survival for female citizens. These categorizations are based upon outdated stereotypes and preconceptions about gender.
“Women’s livelihoods are undermined by sanctions targeting the industries in which they work and reducing the activity of the markets in which they trade.”
The report also displays the holistic impact of humanitarian sanctions against the country. North Korea’s participation in the international business community is hindered by these sanctions, and in turn, the development and infrastructure of the country has been stagnant. These international sanctions have serious domestic and personal implications for the citizens of North Korea, particularly it’s female citizens.
