Jurist Myanmar: civilian killings and arrests mount as military junta attempts to tighten grip in face of protests

JURIST EXCLUSIVE – Law students reporting for JURIST in Myanmar said at least 10 more people were killed across the country Saturday as police and soldiers fired on protesters in multiple locations. In Mandalay, at least six people were killed when a peaceful protest there was broken up. A female householder was killed for protecting fleeing students who she had hidden in her home. A Buddist monk was also killed.

One law student told JURIST:

Nearly all of my friends escaped but today more than 20 students from Mandalay Technological University were arrested. So many people died, they even shot the house owner cuz he or she is trying to hid the students and protected the students. Even shot the pregnant woman. At least 13 people. So many people were injured by gunshots.

We all are willing to fight back now. We can not stand anymore. They are not cracking down. They are just killing the people.

Another said:

We are very helpless right now. If there’s no R2P – Responsibility to Protect – from the international community I think we soon have to protect each other, protect ourselves. We just have to save ourselves, I guess.
