Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves Robles said Wednesday that migrants deported from the US could be held in Costa Rica for four to six weeks before being sent to their home countries. This comes after the Costa Rican government announced its intent to collaborate with the US in the repatriation of undocumented immigrants originally from India and countries in Central Asia.
The arrangement, which is fully funded by the US government, involves the repatriation of 200 undocumented immigrants to the country. It will be supervised by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), an agency that will care for migrants during their stay in the country. The deported immigrants will be transferred from Juan Santamaría International Airport to the Temporary Migrant Care Center (Catem), located in the Corredores canton, where they will not be allowed to leave until their repatriation or sending to a third country is finalized.
This announcement follows more than a week after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Costa Rica. The tour involved bilateral cooperation talks with the Trump administration on matters around illegal immigration and international crime.
Costa Rica follows Panama’s government in accepting deportation flights of non-nationals in the recent deportation efforts by US President Donald Trump’s administration. Recently, the US deported about 300 undocumented migrants to Panama, including 50 Indians. The Indian embassy in Panama has confirmed their safety and security at a hotel with essential facilities.
With the ongoing deportations, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security agencies have arrested undocumented migrants, including alleged gang members and individuals charged with federal offenses.
In his first weeks in office, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with low deportation rates. Since then, the US has tightened its immigration measures, including increased round-ups, with the latest report indicating about 14,470 migrants deported to Mexico. Recently, US border czar Tom Homan said that arrests by ICE have increased more than 137 percent under President Trump, doubling arrests of aliens with criminal convictions and illegal alien gang members.
According to Omer Badilla, the country’s deputy minister of the interior and police, Costa Rica agreed to accept migrants, which include 65 minors, last week “because of our history and our tradition of protecting human rights,” Noticias Telemundo reported. The deportation occurs at a time when concerns about immigrant minors’ safety and welfare have taken the spotlight after the Trump administration abruptly cut off legal aid for unaccompanied immigrant children on Tuesday.
