Femicides in Mexico continue to increase, according to government data released on Friday, amid growing protests demanding that the Mexican government do more to combat this crime.
The Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System published a report on Friday of national crime data from the first eight months of 2020. The government recorded 645 killings of women on account of gender—a 2.2 percent increase from the previous year. According to the data, sexual assaults have also risen during this period, by 57 percent.
Some activists dispute the government’s figures, suggesting that gender-based homicides in 2020 could be as much as three times higher than the official estimate.
Since March, feminist organizations from different areas of the country have protested femicide and government inaction. At the beginning of September, a group of protesters, including relatives of missing or murdered women, began an occupation of the offices of the National Human Rights Commission.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said that he understands the feelings of the victims’ families, but many activists have criticized him for diminishing the importance of the wave of femicides and failing to dedicate resources to protecting women.
