On Tuesday, Datatilsynet, the Norwegian governmental regulatory authority, disclosed that Meta Platforms (Meta) is currently in pursuit of overturning a penalty levied against it for transgressing user privacy rights.

In response to these developments, Datatilsynet has undertaken the stance of advising against the use of Meta products due to perceived shortcomings in security and user confidentiality. The asserting party contends that Facebook, a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, fails to align with the stipulations set forth in the General Data Protection Regulation, a cornerstone of European privacy legislation.

Furthermore, Datatilsynet has instituted a prohibition on the conduct of targeted advertising, known as behavioral advertisements, within the borders of Norway. The accusing faction argues that both Facebook and Instagram, platforms that extensively employ such advertising practices, employ citizen surveillance tactics within the realm of the kingdom.

This is not the first instance of accusatory actions against Meta. An Irish counterpart previously raised grievances concerning the company’s conduct involving behavioral advertising. Allegations were made that the corporation had introduced adjustments to its algorithms, yet subsequent examination by European courts established that these modifications still fell short of adhering to European privacy norms.

In accordance with Norwegian legal stipulations, the corporation faces an obligation to remit a daily sum of 1 million kroner for its contravention of data privacy regulations. The regulatory authority of Norway has specified that this decision will take effect on the August 14, 2023, and will remain operative until the November 3, 2023. Meta Platforms has not released any official statement.

The Norwegian data regulator posits that their legal resolution may potentially hold jurisdictional implications that span across the entirety of Europe. Nonetheless, as of the present juncture, the regulatory authority has not articulated any intentions of imposing comprehensive global sanctions.
