Malawi’s constitutional court on Monday nullified the 2019 presidential election results. A five-judge panel unanimously agreed to the nullification, citing widespread anomalies and irregularities in the election results.
In May 2019 Malawi reelected President Peter Mutharika with 1,940,709 votes, 38.57 percent of total votes. His opposition, Lazarus Chakwera, followed with 1,781,740 votes, 35.41 percent of total votes. Among complaints of corruption, ballot stuffing and other alleged election irregularities, Chakwera contested the results of the 2019 presidential election following Mutharika’s victory.
Chakwera addressed his supporters Tuesday and praised the decision. The constitutional court ordered a new presidential election to be held within the next 150 days, but Mutharika pledged Wednesday to appeal.
