Iran sentenced journalist Ruhollah Zam to death on Tuesday for inciting unrest and protests in Iran.

Zam ran Amadnews, an anti-government website that had around 1.4 million followers on the messaging app Telegram. On Amadnews, Zam shared protest videos and damaging information about Iranian officials. The website was shut down by the government, but it was later re-established under a different name.

Zam had been granted political asylum in France following imprisonment in Iran after the 2009 election. In October the Intelligence Organization of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps arrested him. Zam was accused of inciting nationwide protests during 2017 and 2018 through the content on Amadnews.

On Tuesday, Zam was found guilty of “corruption on earth.” This charge, which is one of Iran’s most serious offenses, brings a death sentence.

Zam can appeal this decision before the Supreme Court of Iran.
