Indonesia released Abu Bakar Bashir, the leader of terrorist group Jemaah Islamiah (JI), from prison on Friday.
Bashir is responsible for orchestrating a terrorist attack that killed 202 people in Bali in 2002. JI allegedly has a connection with Al-Qaeda and both groups were responsible for the 2002 bombings. JI is also responsible for a number of other terrorist attacks including a bombing at a Marriott Hotel in Jakarta that killed 12 people in 2003. In 2011, a court convicted Bashir to 15 years in prison for funding a militant training camp.
A team of Bashir’s lawyers and his family came to pick him from prison. The reason given for his release was his deteriorating health. Police claim they will be monitoring him closely.
