The Lok Sabha approved the fifth extension requested by the Indian Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019. This grant allows the committee to submit its report during the Winter Session of the Parliament.
The motion for extension was submitted by the newly appointed Chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, PP Chaudhary, and Member of Parliament of the Lok Sabha, Bhartruhari Mahtab. The request for an extension read, “That this House does extend up to the first week of Winter session of Parliament, 2021, the time for the presentation of the report of the Joint Committee on the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019.” The motion was passed by a voice vote.
The Personal Data Protection Bill was first introduced in the Parliament in 2019 and subsequently passed on to the committee for revisions. Meenakshi Lekhi, a Member of Parliament, chaired the committee until earlier this month, when she took oath as the new Minister of State for the External Affairs and Culture ministries, as part of the Cabinet reshuffle.
The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 is a piece of landmark legislation that seeks to regulate the processing, collection, and storage of personal data in India. The legislation includes provisions for data localization, data portability, and the right to be forgotten. The legislation also proposes to set up a Data Protection Authority of India, which would regulate the use of personal data by organizations.
