31 human rights organizations issued a joint letter on Friday, urging the European Union (EU) to engage with Bahraini authorities to secure the release of Danish-Bahraini Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja and Swedish-Bahraini Sheikh Mohammed Habib Al-Muqdad. For almost 14 years, both men have been arbitrarily detained, enduring torture and denial of medical care.
According to the letter, Mr Al-Khawaja, and Mr Al-Muqdad were among the human rights defenders, lawyers, journalists, and opposition activists who were arrested and tortured by the Bahraini authorities following the 2011 uprising in the country. The letter expresses concern over the EU’s misleading depiction of Bahrain’s human rights and democracy situation. In its latest Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy 2023, the EU stated that “Bahrain continued to improve its human rights record, notably in the area of social and economic rights and women’s rights,” while omitting the torture, and denial of medical care endured by the members of Bahrain’s political opposition.
The letter concluded by urging the EU to take action to secure the immediate and unconditional release of EU nationals Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja and Mohammed Habib Al-Muqdad by engaging directly with the King of Bahrain. It also called on the EU to meet with them or their families in line with the EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders and coordinate efforts with Denmark and Sweden. Additionally, the EU must ensure accurate reporting on Bahrain’s human rights situation, push for an end to the death penalty, and conduct human rights impact assessments before finalizing agreements with Bahrain to secure meaningful reforms and the release of unjustly imprisoned individuals
The 2011 Bahrain uprising consisted of a series of anti-government protests driven by long-standing grievances over systemic discrimination, corruption, and injustice under the rule of the Sunni Al-Khalifa family, which has governed the country since the 18th century.
